Welcome to Collection Drawer Co... "Details are not details - they make the product." - Charles Eames
Some reasons to use backing boards are obvious. Any time you have a comic or magazine outside its storage there’s always the potential for it to get bent or dinged up. Sure, we all know that.
But what you may not be aware of is how important backing boards can be even if your collectible is residing safely inside a stack of others. As anyone who has tried to store their comics or mags in a neat row knows, they never stay that way. One illusive issue will invariably slip to the side of the stack. And there it will sit, unnoticed, perhaps for years.
Over time, the pressure from the others will take its toll and the next time you look inside you may discover that that issue has developed a spine roll even though nothing has moved since it was carefully put away. And, of course, the longer it sits untouched and unnoticed, the worse the spine roll will be.
But which backing boards to use? That’s another problem. Many boards can actually add to the acidity of the paper. Here’s a link to a study we found comparing the acidity of various brands, including one that was found to be highly acidic
